How to Build a DIY Bird Feeder: A Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

If you’re looking for a fun and easy project to get started with, building a DIY bird feeder is an excellent choice. Not only will you be providing a source of food for the birds in your backyard, but you’ll also learn some valuable skills along the way.

In this post, we’ll walk you through the process of building a basic DIY bird feeder using just a few simple materials. Don’t worry if you’re not handy with tools or have no experience with woodworking – our step-by-step guide is designed to be easy to follow and requires minimal equipment.

Materials Needed

Before we get started, let’s take a look at the materials you’ll need:

Step 1: Cut Out the Bird Feeder Body

Using your saw or hand saw, cut the cedar wood into two pieces that are each 12" long and 6" wide. These will form the sides of your bird feeder. Make sure to cut them straight and smooth out any rough edges with sandpaper.

Step 2: Assemble the Bird Feeder Body

Using hot glue, attach the two side pieces together to form a rectangular shape. Hold them in place for a few seconds until the glue sets. This will create the body of your bird feeder.

Step 3: Create the Roof Supports

Cut four wooden dowels to the same length (about 6" long). These will serve as the supports for the roof. Using hot glue, attach two dowels to each side of the bird feeder body, about 1 inch apart from each other.

Step 4: Attach the Wire Mesh Container

Using wire mesh, create a container that fits inside the bird feeder body. You can use a metal or plastic tray as a template to get an idea of the shape you need. Cut out a piece of wire mesh slightly larger than the tray and bend it into the desired shape. Using hot glue, attach the wire mesh container to the bottom of the bird feeder body.

Step 5: Add a Hanger

Cut a small piece of wire (about 12" long) and attach it to the top of the bird feeder body using hot glue. This will serve as a hanger for hanging your bird feeder from a tree branch.

Step 6: Add a Roof

Using the remaining wooden dowels, create a simple roof by attaching two dowels to each side of the bird feeder body, about 1 inch apart from each other. You can use hot glue or screws to attach them. Make sure the roof is securely attached and won’t come loose in the wind.

Step 7: Add Final Touches

Using waterproof sealant (optional), apply a coat to protect your bird feeder from the elements. You can also add some finishing touches, such as painting or staining the wood, if you prefer.

Tips and Variations

That’s it! With these simple steps, you can build your own DIY bird feeder in no time. Hang it up in your backyard and enjoy watching the birds visit their new snack spot.
